âHell yes!â Quinn says, pushing Gramâs front door with excitement. Excitement Alex hadnât seen come from his rather quiet cousin. Excitement he wished he felt at this very moment. Something about his momâs persistence rubbed him the wrong way. Why did she want me home so badly? The answer to that might come out later on. Or will it? Right now I need to know why on Earth sheâs so happy.
âWhy are you so pumped?â Alex asks, standing in front of the front door.
âIâd like to know too,â Gram says, not far after Alex. Quinn is pouring a pitcher of icy water into a green cup. She takes a big gulp then answers.
âAlex, I finally have a friend. Even though youâre family, youâre fun to hang out with. Youâre nice to be around. You donât think Iâm crazy for wanting to dye my hair and do wild makeup. And I got to stand up for us quiet ones today.â Alex starts to smile. The only family he pretty much has are his parents. He could be himself around Quinn and it was all okay. âWe got a victory today, Alex. Whatâs not to be happy about?â
He canât help but continue smiling. He walks up to her and with no warning, embraces her in a much-needed hug for the both of them.
âWe do need to touch up the red strip in your hair. Itâs fading,â Quinn says as she moves from Alex, taking her cup of water to her room. Gram breathes a breath of relief.
âIâm going to get some of your things from your parentâs house. Anything specific you want or need?â
âWhatever clothes I have in my closet will do. I trust your judgment. Thank you.â
Alex hugs his grandma before she leaves as if he felt safe. His parents never physically abused him but there were little things that turned into big things, and they were entirely too overbearing, overprotecting, and controlling. The abuse is still abuse, physical or not. Itâs like Alex had a leash around his neck. Heâs surprised heâs gotten away with the things heâs done. Strict parents do raise sneaky kids. Schoolâs tomorrow. Iâve got to prepare for that.
Later that night. Alex approaches Quinnâs bedroom door. He knocks and hears what sounds like Quinn talking on the phone. She tells the person she has to go, and then opens the door. âYes?â
âI wanted to talk to Adam for a bit and was wondering if you wanted to join. And after, you can dye my hair, so itâll be fresh and bright for school.â Quinn answers almost immediately.
âYes! Awesome! In your room?â she asks.
âYeah, I just need to ask him a couple of questions.â
Quinn sat on the floor across from Alex as he starts. âIs there anyone with us?â Little to no time passes.
âYESâ
âAdam?â The planchette moves slightly away, then back.
âOkay, good. Adam, is the address you gave us a while back your old house?â The planchette, once again, moves slightly away and back to its spot. âSo it is.
